Our globe is out of Kilter
We have a challenge to solve together
You probably know this, but we belong to one of the most widespread and dominant animals on our planet, and compared to our size, we are by far the most numerous. In total, we are now 8,000 million, and we have reached this number in a record period. Within the last 2000 years or so, everything has changed. The restrictions that previously controlled the numbers of animals seemed to have lost their powers over us. We wanted to disconnect ourselves from other living creatures and hungered to live a different kind of life. We started to break loose, out of balance with mother earth. By eliminating our predators and controlling our diseases nothing could stop us on our journey, except ourselves… We are on a trajectory to consume the planet, use it up. It is not enough to save individual species and groups. Whole habitats are already collapsing.
Return the land we borrow
We must make space so the wilderness can return. By radically reducing the area we use for farming, we can do so. One smooth and effective way to do that can be to change our diet. In nature, you seldom see the large predators because it takes a lot of prey to support a lion or hyena. On the plains of Serengeti, you can see more than 100 prey animals for every predator. Our space demand is similar when we choose to eat our daily meat. Our planet just can’t support billions of large meat eaters in a balanced way. The globe is just not big enough. If everyone had a largely plant-based diet, only half of the land we use today would be necessary.
Accelerate the transition with Kilter
The tools to push agriculture toward balance
Kilter is here to accelerate the world’s transition to a sustainable food system so that the balance again is set. Kilter develops products and solutions to raise yields while at the same time using fewer pesticides, less fertilizer, and emitting less carbon. If we can improve our farming approach, the land grab that we have been pursuing can start to reverse. By embracing this reality, we can still solve the problems we face. Kilter thinks it’s time for our species to stop growing and establish a life on our planet, in balance with nature.
In our design process, we envisage the farmer as the superhero he truly is. After a farm-focused development process and a science-driven approach, we are proud to present our first product. The AX-1. Kilter originates from a dedicated engineering team at Adigo AS in Norway and Kilter AX-1 was born from the AsteriX project.
